5 Movies with Unforgettable Fashion Moments

If you haven’t already seen this movie it should be added to your list of must sees. A romantic comedy that follows the story of a New Yorker traveling to Singapore to meet her boyfriends family for the first time, who happens to be one of the wealthiest families in the country. Singapore is known as one of the global fashion capitals of the world, so it’s not surprising that each character had their own particular sense of style. From couture gowns to quirky printed pajamas, wardrobe stylist Mary Vogt pulled out all the stops. If we had to name a favorite, supporting actress Awkwafina with a wardrobe full of bright and quirky looks.

A classic from 1990 that most likely doesn’t need an introduction. Most of Julia Roberts wardrobe from Pretty Woman could be transported straight to 2020. Polka dots have continued to be important as a non-print print for cami dresses and even head-to-toe looks. The short suit, which is not an easy look to pull off, was seen all over the Spring 21 runway by fashion houses including (but not limited to) Armani, Balmain, and Hermes. Her effortless styling includes a tied up mens button down shirt and a simple black blazer, white tee and jeans. Both looks we can all probably find in our closets. It has been 30 years since this movie premiered but it is just as relevant.

The Danish Girl

The Danish Girl is a beautifully shot film about one of the first known sex reassignment surgeries starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. Much of the film, set in 1920’s Copenhagen, is shot at their home making kimono layers and casual but feminine loungewear a common occurrence. The use of a warm palette along with velvet, silks, and fur textiles compliments the storyline perfectly.

The heist in Ocean’s 8 takes place at the beloved Met Gala, which is known as one of the biggest fashion events of the year. That in itself is a reason to watch, along with a quirky cast of directors that all have distinct styles worth appreciating. Sarah Edwards, who was the head costume designer for the movie, worked with fashion houses including Cartier (for Anne Hathaway’s jewels), Givenchy, Valentino, and Dolce & Gabbana, just to name a few.

Audrey Hepburn will always be remembered for her role as Holly Golightly. She pulls off even the simplest New York fire escape moment in a sweatshirt and chic head piece. The most famous look from the movie is a black Givenchy dress with a scooped out back, black gloves and a dramatic pearl Tiffany’s necklace.
