Matched Sets: Why You’ll Love It & Thank Us Later

BY: MEG LINDLEY

In the recent past, wearing one color or print head to toe would be questionable. The matched set, which was born in the 1970’s, has resurfaced and evolved bringing ease and even elegance to the runway. Today, this is one of the hottest trends in every woman’s shopping cart with silky pajama dressing, knitted sets, and sweat suits.  The coord trend isn’t going anywhere for 2021. Many fall favorites will return, mixed with new fabrics and silhouettes, preparing wardrobes for the warmer months.

Silk will transition to cotton for spring, creating the introduction of the bralette and fit and flare skirt silhouettes. Christian Siriano illustrates the woman of the future, in head to toe picnic plaid, from her gaucho hat to a flattering bralette, full flare skirt, and the newest accessory, the face mask. Matching prints will maintain a sense of ease and comfort for work from home days, while still making a statement. Dolce and Gabbana (above) designed with the new normal in mind, creating a three piece outfit including a bralette with a matching jacket for versatility. Versace, on the other hand, delivers the exact opposite of wearable but you get the idea.

bandeau meets high-waisted short

Springtime calls for shorter silhouettes and that panic for sunglasses to manage the heat. While weather is unstable during spring months, layering pieces are still important. Hermes designed seasonally appropriate silhouettes layering a bomber jacket over a leather bandeau made in luxe leather. A great matched set to take from day into night, leaving a high-waisted short to compliment. Shorts make bold prints and fabric easy to wear since there is much less fabric to outfit. LBV used raffia, a fiber difficult for most silhouettes due to its structure and lack of stretch, to outfit a fringe-accented bandeau with matching shorts.

the comfy set

These silhouettes could roll right through from Fall to Spring with little to no effort. At this point, the comfy set is the most seasonless and investment-worthy outfit. The super soft fabrics and oversized silhouettes offer longevity and versatility for whatever your day will bring. Silhouette, quality and fit are going to be very important when it comes to the success of these pieces.

If you don’t believe us that matching sets are important, the trend moving to accessories should prove our point. Handbags, face masks, and everyday accessories are used to heighten the trend and create an easy-to-wear look. The use of geometric prints and patterns for Spring will mix seamlessly into your wardrobe.  Alice & Olivia and Balmain infuse signature collection prints onto the runway finishing each look through every detail.
