The Most Inspiring Spring 2021 Fashion Films
By: Meg Lindley
New York Fashion Week started Sunday night, but in a way we have never seen it before. The fashion industry has had to re-imagine not only how they will design their collections during this bizarre time, but also how it will be presented to the world. This presents both a challenge, and an opportunity to express their creativity in new ways. I have been most inspired by the less typical runway shows, that include a true storyline behind the collection, and a look into the behind the scenes action.
marina moscone
Moscone has always had a hands-on approach to her designs. A few seasons ago, she presented a collection of dip-dyed garments that she had created in her own apartment, which to this day is still one of my favorite collections from her. From sculpting clay for her accessories to weaving her own textiles with leftover yarns on a wooden loom, Moscone has really taken her craftsmanship to a whole new level for Spring 2021. She truly takes you behind the scenes into the making of the collection.
david hart
David Hart is not the first one to embrace seasonless as a concept but he is the first to actually name his collection “Seasonless”. These designs have not yet come to complete fruition, however we are taken straight to the source of inspiration with digital conversations between designer David Hart and Neo-Conceptualist artist Peter Halley.
ulla johnson
Ulla Johnson’s runway show was a powerful, yet serene runway experience for her viewers. The soulful voice of Shamiqua, a young 17 year old from Staten Island, filled the Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island as the models made their way down the color blocked runway. Johnson calls this collection a “Love Letter to New York”. You can read the full letter from her here.
