The epic TWA Flight Center, designed by Eero Saarinen during the early 60’s was the posh setting for Nicolas Ghesquière’s latest cruise show. The avant- garde terminal at JFK Airport, will soon be a luxury hotel, but the location itself is an architectural landmark that always served as inspiration for dreamers and travelers to soared the skies and know the unknown.
Sadly modern traveling has lost its charm, as much of the elegance this world used to have, but Louis Vuitton intended to revamp this vibe or at least make us think about it by offering an agnostic energy filled with bubble skirts, leathers and sometimes 60’s, sometimes 80’s and sometimes 90 inspired collection.
A Bomber jacket with the New York high line painted on it, military boots (sometimes open toed) and TWA’s iconic futuristic video implanted bags, the collection was a conglomerate of avant- garde “ness” faithful to the aesthetics of the location. We were looking to a dreadful future.
The intention was a reconnection to New York. Among voluptuous velvet draped structural jackets and leather pants, Wall Street pinstripe tailored pantsuits, studded bustiers with crystals, and the famous Chrysler Building in geometric metallic embroideries, the designer was not afraid to be extremely cliché.
The collection was a bit chaotic, continuing the style Ghresquiére has worked with the brand. It was definitely more upwards in vision and not necessarily what the consumer might want. But Ghesquiére has rather given the consumer what they deserved and so far they have always follow.
